The Faculty of Civil Engineering currently consists of 19 departments, the Institute for Forensic Engineering, Central Laboratory, Computing Centre, Library and of an Information Center. It is the largest educational and scientific research center in the field of civil engineering and geodesy in Slovakia. The principal aim of the Faculty is to provide high level education based on Slovakia’s traditional and cultural heritage and on the latest scientific knowledge. In accordance with the Bologna Declaration, the Faculty offers three-degree accredited study programmes using a credit-based modular-unit system. The system includes student mobility and offers the possibility to earn credits from foreign universities.
A new system of study introduced after 1989 at the Faculty has recently been further updated to a credit-based modular-unit system. The Faculty of Civil Engineering offers 8 accredited Bachelor study programmes, 11 Master study programmes and 9 Doctoral study programmes. The general medium of instruction is Slovak. The Faculty offers accredited English-language B.Sc. and M.Sc. programmes in Civil Engineering. Doctoral study programmes are held in Slovak or English.
Bachelor study programmes lasts for 3 years (6 semesters) with the exception of the “Building Structures and Architecture” study programme, which takes 4 years (8 semesters). The standard length of master study programmes is 2 years (4 semesters). The full-time form of the doctoral study takes 4 years (8 semesters) and the part-time form lasts 5 years (10 semesters).
The first part of the study, which is a three-year course (180 or 240 credit points, depending on the specific study programme), leads to the bachelor degree. It provides students with the theoretical background necessary for further specialisation as well as with the basics of civil engineering. To broaden the students' educational perspectives, courses in the arts and social sciences, including philosophy, sociology, law, psychology and aesthetics, have been added to the curricula.
The second part of the study, which is aimed at developing special skills in the chosen specialisation, is completed by a diploma thesis. Its successful completion results in the award of the Diploma in Civil Engineering - Dipl. Ing., an M.Sc. equivalent degree. This part takes two years (120 credit points) and enables students to use the gained knowledge and skills in their vocational education and specialisation.
The third part of the study is the doctoral programme which takes eight semesters (240 credit points). The main aim of the doctoral studies is to prepare the graduates for pursuing a career in the chosen scientific area. Candidates are supported by their supervisors. An individual study programme is arranged for each Ph.D. candidate. The study programme includes teaching activities and seminars in a foreign language. Successful completion of the studies and defence of the dissertation thesis result in the award of the Philosophiae doctor Diploma – Ph.D.
Graduates of the Faculty of Civil Engineering of STU can find employment in various fields and they can utilize their expert knowledge and skills in practice. They are qualified to design projects, to prepare and manage structures of buildings and structures of civil engineering works, they are also qualified specialists in water management and can perform and supervise work in the field of geodesy and cartography. Furthermore, they can hold positions in investment and economic sectors, in scientific research institutions, in educational institutions and in computing centres. Graduates can even carry out entrepreneurial activities.
The civil engineering training is supported by education in foreign languages (English or German) at all levels of instruction. This is ensured by the Department of Languages. Instruction in Slovak language is offered for foreign students. A variety of athletic activities is provided by the Department of Physical Education.
