The Department of the Humane Sciences was established in 1991, headed by Professor E. Duda. It was created by the merging of the Department of Humanities and the Department of Law which carried out their activities at the Faculty. The basic concept of the development of the teaching of humane subjects is focused on the formation of future engineers’ personalities, the development of their creative thinking, the deepening of their legal consciousness and the formation of their cultural personalities with the aim to perfect and extend the focus of professional and technical studies.
Presently, the Department carries out its pedagogical activities in all fields of study of the Faculty of Civil Engineering. It provides the teaching of social and humane sciences in the form of compulsory, optional and recommended subjects such as Political Science, History of Civil Engineering, Macroeconomics, General Law, Construction and Commercial Law, Property Law, Environmental Engineering, Ecology and Landscape Regeneration, Environmental Law and Copyright Law. The Department also offers Political Science and legal disciplines at some faculties of the Slovak University of Technology (the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology, the Faculty of Material Sciences and Technology and the Faculty of Architecture). Its research is focused on the humanization of the engineering-technical education, the legal protection of technical creative activities, the humanization of the environment and the legal aspects of environmental protection and management. The members of the Department have extensive publication activities in these areas.
Recently, the Department has developed intensive cooperation with similar departments at universities of technology in Slovakia and with the Institute Social Sciences of the Technical University, Brno and the Department of Social Sciences CVUT Praha.
