Tentative PhD. thesis topics:
1. Connectivity and flood runoff dynamics in headwater catchments of Slovakia
2. Watercourse restoration in relation to river morphology
3. The impact of climate change on the quality of the natural environment of streams and the proposal of adaptation measures
4. Analysis of drought and proposal of drought adaptation measures
5. A strategic plan for climate change adaptation measures to support the concept of sustainability in an urbanized landscape

The ideal candidate
will have a background in Civil or Environmental Engineering or related fields. Candidates should also possess strong computer, scientific, and analytical expertise, have excellent communication (oral and written) skills, have the ability to work independently and as part of a team, self-motivation, adaptability, and a positive attitude. Since foreseen activities include model development, the candidate is required to have computational proficiency (or the will to pursue it) preferably in R/python/Matlab and GIS products. It is intended that the developed tools and/or models are produced as free software.
Main duties and responsibilities include:
- Perform original research in the area of ecohydrology for agroecosystems and climate-smart agriculture.
- To lead and contribute to publications for high-impact journals.
- Contribute to broad Lab activities (including co-supervision of MSc students and teaching assistance).
Your profile:
- A MSc in Environmental Sciences, Physics, or Engineering.
- Strong interest in ecohydrological modeling and applications to agroecosystems.
- Hands-on experience with numerical modeling and analysis of large datasets.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills in English.
- Ability to work independently as well as in a team.
- Creative, enthusiastic, and willing to learn.
- Self-motivated and have a sense for scientific novelty.
- Experience with scientific writing is valued.

Looking for candidates interested in working with processing large datasets, applying models and machine learning as tools to describe natural processes, understand causes and impacts of pressing environmental issues, and translate scientific findings into actions to support decision-making and improve the water resource quality for communities. The research will focus on furthering the understanding of contaminant transport in the environment under climate and hydrological change, by describing surface-subsurface water interactions using environmental tracers, including stable water isotopes, identifying drivers of water degradation, and assessing climate change impacts on water systems.
Qualifications: Candidates should have a degree in an engineering field, environmental, atmospheric or climate-related science. Dedicated and collaborative individuals, with good communication and scientific writing skills, knowledge of computer programming (Python, R, MATLAB), applied statistics, and/or experience in data analysis and modeling are strongly encouraged to apply.
